A 10-day trip on the Northern Way

Medieval queens and pilgrims have chosen the Northern Way to reach Santiago. It runs was to west crossing northern Spanish along the coast and is also known as the Coastal Way.

From Santander (Cantabria) to Oviedo (Asturias) and Santiago de Compostela (Galicia)

We have carefully selected a portion of one of the most interesting parts of Spain starting in Cantabria, traveling through Asturias and ending in Galicia. The area is famous for its beautiful green landscapes, sandy beaches and cliffs, modern vibrant cities such as Santander, Oviedo and Santiago de Compostela, and authentic traditions.

The Northern Way is a little more challenging than the other Caminos. This is because geographically it has some uphill and downhill sections. However, they are short and there are no high mountains. What it does provide is astonishing views, small villages, many historic heritage sites and the opportunity to experience other aspects of Spanish culture. Although pilgrims have been walking along this route since the ninth century to pay homage to Saint James, it remains one of the quieter Caminos.

A Culinary Pilgrimage

The Northern Way takes us through a region with some of the best gastronomy in Spain, famous for its food, wine and culinary expertise. We offer the chance to enjoy delicious meals in Santander, famed for local specialties like sobao pasiego sponge cake, and Oviedo, known for Asturian delicacies like cachopo (steak with bell peppers) and fabada (pork and bean stew). On top of which the area is renowned for its seafood, such as fresh squid, crab, shrimp, and sea bass. Salmon are caught in Asturian rivers, notably the Sella. Plus of course we try out the region’s many cheeses and wines, which we get to taste in local vineyards.
